Further US-Iran technical talks reportedly set to continue later today
The main thing now is that the US and Iran have agreed to a 60-day "roadmap" in order to reach a final nuclear and sanctions deal. Call it whatever you like, be it a "memorandum of understanding" or a "framework agreement". However, the bottom line is that they have reached an accord on advancing negotiations to the next stage over the coming two months.
That being said, both sides have to make sure that they understand well enough the key red lines that need not be crossed during this period. And this where the technical talks come into play, so as to provide some medium of communication.
Iran media has said that deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, will be heading a team for further technical talks later today. Adding that these talks will be about the "mechanism for implementing the memorandum of understanding and forming relevant technical groups".
The talks are expected to carry on through the week but essentially, we will have to watch out for the key red lines that have been discussed.
- Have the sanctions on Iran oil exports been lifted? It appears so
- What about the portion of frozen assets to be released back to Iran? Still no word on that yet..
- Has the US lifted its naval blockade? It doesn't seem like it..
- Has the Strait of Hormuz been reopened? Nope, certainly not..
- What about the Israel-Hezbollah situation? A deconfliction cell is being set up but no firm details yet..
So, call this deal whatever you want. But the fact is, nothing has really changed since the weekend.
And Iran is also quick to reaffirm that no nuclear discussions or topics were discussed during the technical talks over the past two days. So, as you were.
