Helena Lopes/Pexels Millions of retirees finally have an answer to one of the biggest Social Security questions of the year.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) officially announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 on October 14, 2026, giving beneficiaries a larger increase than they received this year.

But knowing the percentage doesn’t necessarily tell you how much money will land in your bank account.

According to the Social Security Administration, the increase will affect approximately 76 million Americans receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The average retired worker is expected to receive about $75 more per month, bringing the estimated average benefit to $2,170.

However, Medicare premiums, benefit deductions, and individual payment amounts can change what retirees actually receive.

Fortunately, Social Security has confirmed when beneficiaries can see their personalized 2027 Social Security COLA notices, including their exact new benefit amounts.

Here’s what retirees should know before January arrives.
